Born in Samsun , of a father of Thesalloniki origin and a painter
artist mother from a Pasha family of Istanbul .
1960
Graduates Robert College in Istanbul . Two years of military service in an Anatolian village as a primary school teacher.
1962
Rome , Italy . Intensive work on drawing, painting and mural
techniques. Acquaintance with Mexican mural painting.
Participation in student exhibitions within the academy.
1966
Graduates the Fine Arts Academy of Rome and returns to Turkey .
Membership to the Workers Party of Turkey . Mural paintings,
posters for democratic organizations and trade unions, drawings for progressive publications.
1968
First solo exhibition in Istanbul . First marriage. Works on ceramics, graphics, stage design and experimental short films. Group works with sculptor K.Acar, cartoonist T.Oral and other artists.
1971
Military coup. Taken in custody on a summer midnight together
With his wife and cartoonist T.Oral. All his archive and hundreds of
books destroyed.
1976
First mural painting execution during the International Arts Festival
of Antalya ; 'Prometeus', acrilic on cement, 110m2. Selected
chairman to the Visual Arts association of Turkey . Divorce.
Draws the countrywide popular poster for the 1st of May.
1977
Group exhibitions in Paris and Berlin . The '1st of May' poster wins
1st prize in the International Poster Competition of the World
Federation of Trade Unions, Prag.
1978
Takes place in the editorial board of arts and culture monthly ‘Art
Labour', together with writer and poet friends A.Bezirci, B.Pirhasan,
A.Behramoglu and A.Taygun. Writes weekly essays on art in the
daily paper 'Politika'.
1980
Another major mural painting 'Our World'; acrylic on cement, 70m2, Metal Workers Union Building , Istanbul . Military Coup of 12th of September. Destruction of the mural 'Prometeus' in Antalya by military command.
1981
Marries Melek Ulagay.
1982
Birth of their son, Ferhat. Detention for eight months, by military
court with the accusation of being a founder and board member of
the Turkish Peace Committee. Exhibition of 'paintings from Maltepe Prison', in the City Gallery of Istanbul , Taksim. Second detention by the same accusation.
1985
Exhibition of 'Paintings of Longing' in Ankara , organized by his wife Melek, while detention continues.
Nomination of the 12 detained peace movement leaders for the
Nobel Peace Prize.
1986
End of a detention of 38 months. International exhibition in Liege
Museum , Belgium organized by the Amnesty International; 'In honor of Turkish Painter O.Taylan, political prisoner'.
1988
Documentary film by director N.Arca on 'Paintings of Longing'.
1988-1990
Participation in 'Turkish Highlights' exhibitions in London , Amsterdam and Moscow . A period of intensive work on
oil paintings.
1990
Solo exhibition '1890; on History and Freedom' in Urart Gallery,
Ankara . Starts his first 'Big Studio' in Aslanyatagi street in Beyoglu-Istanbul ; group workshops and studio exhibitions.
1993
Solo exhibition, Simon's Rock of Bard College, M.A. , U.S.A.
Retrospective exhibition "25th year" in the Municipality Gallery,
Taksim-Istanbul. The 'Big Studio' moves to Sofyali st. Beyoglu.
